b'TECH TIP PAGETech Tip 55: Assuming you read & understand how tire slip angle works in Tech Tip 33 one thing we do NOT want to allowis tire Slip Angle Crossover on corner entry. This is when the front tires are initially toed-in, then toe-out in dive under braking, or vice- versa. This transition from toe-in to toe-outor toe-out to toe-inliterally takes the tire toZERO slip angle! When this happens, the front tires have less grip & zero feel. Have you ever turned into acorner in a race car and the front end felt super light (no feel)? That is Slip Angle Crossover. With all bump steer curves, the tires will experience this, either in dive or on lift. Were OK with crossover in lift, but NOT in dive. To prevent this, always run static toe-out in your racecar & make sure your bump steer curve goes straight and/or further toed out, in dive. Frankly, Rons more aggressive suspension packages, with shocks that run a lot of tie-down in the bleed system, the front end lifts upon acceleration, but rarely gets above ride height. So younever experience Slip Angle Crossover.Tech Tip 56: Dont mix up Tire Slip Angle with Car Slip Angle. Tire slip angle is thedifference in angle (measured in degrees) of the wheel compared to the tires footprint on thetr ack. Car slip angle is the difference in angle (measured in degrees) of the car itself comparedto the direction of travel.Tech Tip 57: Why should you consider a 4130 Chromoly & DOM roll cage structure over allDOM? Simple. Permanent weight savings, up high. For all measurable purposes 4130 Chromoly & 1018 DOM weigh the same. But Chromoly has a tensile strength of 97,200#,while 1018 DOM is 63,800#.Our Track-Warrior cage structure has approximately 82 of tubing from the main hoop to thefirewall building the driver cockpit. This cockpit in our 1.75 x .125 wall 1018 DOM cageweighs 177#.This same cockpit in our 1.75 x .095 wall 4130 Chromoly cage weighs 137#. Chromolysaves 40# permanently. And this 40# weight reduction is all above the frame rails, lowering the CG of a Chromoly cage versus a DOM cage. When we compare the strength of 1.75 x .095 4130 Chromoly to 1.75 x .125 1018 DOMthe thinner wall Chromoly cage is still 15.7% STRONGER then the 1018 DOM cage. So, the 4130 cage offers us a permanent 40# weight savings, lower CG, stronger, safer cage &only adds about $1000 to your build. Forget Carbon Fiber body panels. Nothing else you buywill offer you the same weight savings & performance gain for the dollar. 503'
